Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a wooden spoon
Hold a wooden spoon. Read Isaiah 16 in about four minutes, stopping at Isaiah 16:5: “A throne will be established in loving kindness. One will sit on it in truth, in the tent of David, judging, seeking justice, and swift to do righteousness.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Isaiah 16?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Isaiah 16 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Send the lambs for the ruler of the land from Selah to the wilderness, to the mountain of the daughter of Zion.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “For the fields of Heshbon languish with the vine of Sibmah. The lords of the nations have broken down its choice branches, which reached even to Jazer, which wandered into the wilderness. Its shoots were spread abroad. They passed over the sea.” Isaiah 16 opens with these words: “Send the lambs for the ruler of the land from Selah to the wilderness, to the mountain of the daughter of Zion.” The line to keep is Isaiah 16:5: “A throne will be established in loving kindness. One will sit on it in truth, in the tent of David, judging, seeking justice, and swift to do righteousness.” Carry the word “throne” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Isaiah 16:5: “A throne will be established in loving kindness. One will sit on it in truth, in the tent of David, judging, seeking justice, and swift to do righteousness.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Isaiah 16? Then try this: Read “A throne will be established in loving kindness. One will sit on it in truth, in the tent of David, judging,…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Isaiah 16. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Isaiah 16:5. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Isaiah 16 and write Isaiah 16:5 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
