Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a small lamp
Hold a small lamp. Read Genesis 22 in about four minutes, stopping at Genesis 22:12: “He said, “Don’t lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.”” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Genesis 22?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Genesis 22 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “After these things, God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” He said, “Here I am.”” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and saw that behind him was a ram caught in the thicket by his horns. Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering instead of his son.” Genesis 22 opens with these words: “After these things, God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” He said, “Here I am.”” The line to keep is Genesis 22:12: “He said, “Don’t lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.”” Carry the word “hand” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Genesis 22:12: “He said, “Don’t lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.”” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Genesis 22? Then try this: Read “He said, “Don’t lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Genesis 22. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Genesis 22:12. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Genesis 22 and write Genesis 22:12 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
