Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a key
Hold a key. Read Isaiah 14 in about four minutes, stopping at Isaiah 14:13: “You said in your heart, “I will ascend into heaven! I will exalt my throne above the stars of God! I will sit on the mountain of assembly, in the far north!” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Isaiah 14?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Isaiah 14 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “For Yahweh will have compassion on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and set them in their own land. The foreigner will join himself with them, and they will unite with the house of Jacob.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “who made the world like a wilderness, and overthrew its cities; who didn’t release his prisoners to their home?”” Isaiah 14 opens with these words: “For Yahweh will have compassion on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and set them in their own land. The foreigner will join himself with…” The line to keep is Isaiah 14:13: “You said in your heart, “I will ascend into heaven! I will exalt my throne above the stars of God! I will sit on the mountain of assembly, in the far north!” Carry the word “heart” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Isaiah 14:13: “You said in your heart, “I will ascend into heaven! I will exalt my throne above the stars of God! I will sit on the mountain of assembly, in the far north!” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Isaiah 14? Then try this: Read “You said in your heart, “I will ascend into heaven! I will exalt my throne above the stars of God! I will…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Isaiah 14. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Isaiah 14:13. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Isaiah 14 and write Isaiah 14:13 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
