Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a folded cloth
Hold a folded cloth. Read Isaiah 12 in about four minutes, stopping at Isaiah 12:2: “Behold, God is my salvation. I will trust, and will not be afraid; for Yah, Yahweh, is my strength and song; and he has become my salvation.”” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Isaiah 12?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Isaiah 12 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “In that day you will say, “I will give thanks to you, Yahweh; for though you were angry with me, your anger has turned away and you comfort me.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “In that day you will say, “Give thanks to Yahweh! Call on his name. Declare his doings among the peoples. Proclaim that his name is exalted!” Isaiah 12 opens with these words: “In that day you will say, “I will give thanks to you, Yahweh; for though you were angry with me, your anger has turned away and you…” The line to keep is Isaiah 12:2: “Behold, God is my salvation. I will trust, and will not be afraid; for Yah, Yahweh, is my strength and song; and he has become my salvation.”” Carry the word “behold” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Isaiah 12:2: “Behold, God is my salvation. I will trust, and will not be afraid; for Yah, Yahweh, is my strength and song; and he has become my salvation.”” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Isaiah 12? Then try this: Read “Behold, God is my salvation. I will trust, and will not be afraid; for Yah, Yahweh, is my strength and song;…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Isaiah 12. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Isaiah 12:2. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Isaiah 12 and write Isaiah 12:2 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
