Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a smooth stone
Hold a smooth stone. Read Isaiah 9 in about four minutes, stopping at Isaiah 9:6: “For to us a child is born. To us a son is given; and the government will be on his shoulders. His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Isaiah 9?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Isaiah 9 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “But there shall be no more gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time, he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali; but in the latter time he has made it glorious, by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Therefore Yahweh will set up on high against him the adversaries of Rezin, and will stir up his enemies,” Isaiah 9 opens with these words: “But there shall be no more gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time, he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land…” The line to keep is Isaiah 9:6: “For to us a child is born. To us a son is given; and the government will be on his shoulders. His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,…” Carry the word “child” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Isaiah 9:6: “For to us a child is born. To us a son is given; and the government will be on his shoulders. His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Isaiah 9? Then try this: Read “For to us a child is born. To us a son is given; and the government will be on his shoulders. His name will…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Isaiah 9. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Isaiah 9:6. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Isaiah 9 and write Isaiah 9:6 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
