Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a piece of bread
Hold a piece of bread. Read Song of Solomon 8 in about four minutes, stopping at Song of Solomon 8:6: “Set me as a seal on your heart, as a seal on your arm; for love is strong as death. Jealousy is as cruel as Sheol. Its flashes are flashes of fire, a very flame of Yahweh.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Song of Solomon 8?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Song of Solomon 8 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Oh that you were like my brother, who nursed from the breasts of my mother! If I found you outside, I would kiss you; yes, and no one would despise me.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “We have a little sister. She has no breasts. What shall we do for our sister in the day when she is to be spoken for?” Song of Solomon 8 opens with these words: “Oh that you were like my brother, who nursed from the breasts of my mother! If I found you outside, I would kiss you; yes, and no one…” The line to keep is Song of Solomon 8:6: “Set me as a seal on your heart, as a seal on your arm; for love is strong as death. Jealousy is as cruel as Sheol. Its flashes are flashes of fire, a very…” Carry the word “seal” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Song of Solomon 8:6: “Set me as a seal on your heart, as a seal on your arm; for love is strong as death. Jealousy is as cruel as Sheol. Its flashes are flashes of fire, a very flame of Yahweh.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Song of Solomon 8? Then try this: Read “Set me as a seal on your heart, as a seal on your arm; for love is strong as death. Jealousy is as cruel as…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
