Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a paper crown
Hold a paper crown. Read Song of Solomon 5 in about four minutes, stopping at Song of Solomon 5:4: “My beloved thrust his hand in through the latch opening. My heart pounded for him.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Song of Solomon 5?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Song of Solomon 5 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “I have come into my garden, my sister, my bride. I have gathered my myrrh with my spice; I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey; I have drunk my wine with my milk. Friends Eat, friends! Drink, yes, drink abundantly, beloved.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “How is your beloved better than another beloved, you fairest among women? How is your beloved better than another beloved, that you do so adjure us?” Song of Solomon 5 opens with these words: “I have come into my garden, my sister, my bride. I have gathered my myrrh with my spice; I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey; I have…” The line to keep is Song of Solomon 5:4: “My beloved thrust his hand in through the latch opening. My heart pounded for him.” Carry the word “beloved” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Song of Solomon 5:4: “My beloved thrust his hand in through the latch opening. My heart pounded for him.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Song of Solomon 5? Then try this: Read “My beloved thrust his hand in through the latch opening. My heart pounded for him.” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
