Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a wooden spoon
Hold a wooden spoon. Read Song of Solomon 4 in about four minutes, stopping at Song of Solomon 4:10: “How beautiful is your love, my sister, my bride! How much better is your love than wine! The fragrance of your perfumes than all kinds of spices!” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Song of Solomon 4?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Song of Solomon 4 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Behold, you are beautiful, my love. Behold, you are beautiful. Your eyes are doves behind your veil. Your hair is as a flock of goats, that descend from Mount Gilead.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “You have ravished my heart, my sister, my bride. You have ravished my heart with one of your eyes, with one chain of your neck.” Song of Solomon 4 opens with these words: “Behold, you are beautiful, my love. Behold, you are beautiful. Your eyes are doves behind your veil. Your hair is as a flock of goats,…” The line to keep is Song of Solomon 4:10: “How beautiful is your love, my sister, my bride! How much better is your love than wine! The fragrance of your perfumes than all kinds of spices!” Carry the word “beautiful” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Song of Solomon 4:10: “How beautiful is your love, my sister, my bride! How much better is your love than wine! The fragrance of your perfumes than all kinds of spices!” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Song of Solomon 4? Then try this: Read “How beautiful is your love, my sister, my bride! How much better is your love than wine! The fragrance of…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
