Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a key
Hold a key. Read Song of Solomon 2 in about four minutes, stopping at Song of Solomon 2:3: “As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, his fruit was sweet to my taste.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Song of Solomon 2?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Song of Solomon 2 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “I am a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “My beloved is like a roe or a young deer. Behold, he stands behind our wall! He looks in at the windows. He glances through the lattice.” Song of Solomon 2 opens with these words: “I am a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys.” The line to keep is Song of Solomon 2:3: “As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, his fruit was sweet to my taste.” Carry the word “apple” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Song of Solomon 2:3: “As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, his fruit was sweet to my taste.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Song of Solomon 2? Then try this: Read “As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Song of Solomon 2. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Song of Solomon 2:3. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Song of Solomon 2 and write Song of Solomon 2:3 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
