Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a cup of water
Hold a cup of water. Read Ecclesiastes 11 in about four minutes, stopping at Ecclesiastes 11:5: “As you don’t know what is the way of the wind, nor how the bones grow in the womb of her who is with child; even so you don’t know the work of God who does all.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Ecclesiastes 11?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Ecclesiastes 11 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Cast your bread on the waters; for you shall find it after many days.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “In the morning sow your seed, and in the evening don’t withhold your hand; for you don’t know which will prosper, whether this or that, or whether they both will be equally good.” Ecclesiastes 11 opens with these words: “Cast your bread on the waters; for you shall find it after many days.” The line to keep is Ecclesiastes 11:5: “As you don’t know what is the way of the wind, nor how the bones grow in the womb of her who is with child; even so you don’t know the work of God who does all.” Carry the word “know” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Ecclesiastes 11:5: “As you don’t know what is the way of the wind, nor how the bones grow in the womb of her who is with child; even so you don’t know the work of God who does all.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Ecclesiastes 11? Then try this: Read “As you don’t know what is the way of the wind, nor how the bones grow in the womb of her who is with child;…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Ecclesiastes 11. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Ecclesiastes 11:5. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Ecclesiastes 11 and write Ecclesiastes 11:5 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
