Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a wooden spoon
Hold a wooden spoon. Read Ecclesiastes 6 in about four minutes, stopping at Ecclesiastes 6:6: “Yes, though he live a thousand years twice told, and yet fails to enjoy good, don’t all go to one place?” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Ecclesiastes 6?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Ecclesiastes 6 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is heavy on men:” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “All the labor of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.” Ecclesiastes 6 opens with these words: “There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is heavy on men:” The line to keep is Ecclesiastes 6:6: “Yes, though he live a thousand years twice told, and yet fails to enjoy good, don’t all go to one place?” Carry the word “though” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Ecclesiastes 6:6: “Yes, though he live a thousand years twice told, and yet fails to enjoy good, don’t all go to one place?” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Ecclesiastes 6? Then try this: Read “Yes, though he live a thousand years twice told, and yet fails to enjoy good, don’t all go to one place?” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Ecclesiastes 6. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Ecclesiastes 6:6. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Ecclesiastes 6 and write Ecclesiastes 6:6 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
