Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a smooth stone
Hold a smooth stone. Read Proverbs 30 in about four minutes, stopping at Proverbs 30:5: ““Every word of God is flawless. He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Proverbs 30?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Proverbs 30 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “The words of Agur the son of Jakeh; the revelation: the man says to Ithiel, to Ithiel and Ucal:” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, ““The eye that mocks at his father, and scorns obedience to his mother: the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, the young eagles shall eat it.” Proverbs 30 opens with these words: “The words of Agur the son of Jakeh; the revelation: the man says to Ithiel, to Ithiel and Ucal:” The line to keep is Proverbs 30:5: ““Every word of God is flawless. He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.” Carry the word “word” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Proverbs 30:5: ““Every word of God is flawless. He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Proverbs 30? Then try this: Read ““Every word of God is flawless. He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Proverbs 30. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Proverbs 30:5. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Proverbs 30 and write Proverbs 30:5 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
