Five-minute object lesson

Prop: a paper crown

Hold a paper crown. Read Proverbs 28 in about four minutes, stopping at Proverbs 28:14: “Blessed is the man who always fears; but one who hardens his heart falls into trouble.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Proverbs 28?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.

Story script

Proverbs 28 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “The wicked flee when no one pursues; but the righteous are as bold as a lion.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.

Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “As a roaring lion or a charging bear, so is a wicked ruler over helpless people.” Proverbs 28 opens with these words: “The wicked flee when no one pursues; but the righteous are as bold as a lion.” The line to keep is Proverbs 28:14: “Blessed is the man who always fears; but one who hardens his heart falls into trouble.” Carry the word “blessed” from that verse into the rest of the day.

The line worth learning out loud is Proverbs 28:14: “Blessed is the man who always fears; but one who hardens his heart falls into trouble.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.

What happens first in Proverbs 28? Then try this: Read “Blessed is the man who always fears; but one who hardens his heart falls into trouble.” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.

Walk the room as if you are moving through Proverbs 28. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Proverbs 28:14. The last child says the whole verse.

Craft

On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Proverbs 28 and write Proverbs 28:14 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
