Five-minute object lesson

Prop: a small lamp

Hold a small lamp. Read Proverbs 19 in about four minutes, stopping at Proverbs 19:3: “The foolishness of man subverts his way; his heart rages against Yahweh.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Proverbs 19?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.

Story script

Proverbs 19 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Better is the poor who walks in his integrity than he who is perverse in his lips and is a fool.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.

Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep. The idle soul shall suffer hunger.” Proverbs 19 opens with these words: “Better is the poor who walks in his integrity than he who is perverse in his lips and is a fool.” The line to keep is Proverbs 19:3: “The foolishness of man subverts his way; his heart rages against Yahweh.” Carry the word “foolishnes” from that verse into the rest of the day.

The line worth learning out loud is Proverbs 19:3: “The foolishness of man subverts his way; his heart rages against Yahweh.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.

What happens first in Proverbs 19? Then try this: Read “The foolishness of man subverts his way; his heart rages against Yahweh.” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.

Craft

On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Proverbs 19 and write Proverbs 19:3 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
