Five-minute object lesson

Prop: a piece of bread

Hold a piece of bread. Read Psalms 141 in about four minutes, stopping at Psalms 141:4: “Don’t incline my heart to any evil thing, to practice deeds of wickedness with men who work iniquity. Don’t let me eat of their delicacies.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Psalms 141?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.

Story script

Psalms 141 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Yahweh, I have called on you. Come to me quickly! Listen to my voice when I call to you.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.

Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Their judges are thrown down by the sides of the rock. They will hear my words, for they are well spoken.” Psalms 141 opens with these words: “Yahweh, I have called on you. Come to me quickly! Listen to my voice when I call to you.” The line to keep is Psalms 141:4: “Don’t incline my heart to any evil thing, to practice deeds of wickedness with men who work iniquity. Don’t let me eat of their delicacies.” Carry the word “incline” from that verse into the rest of the day.

The line worth learning out loud is Psalms 141:4: “Don’t incline my heart to any evil thing, to practice deeds of wickedness with men who work iniquity. Don’t let me eat of their delicacies.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.

What happens first in Psalms 141? Then try this: Read “Don’t incline my heart to any evil thing, to practice deeds of wickedness with men who work iniquity. Don’t…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.

Walk the room as if you are moving through Psalms 141. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Psalms 141:4. The last child says the whole verse.

Craft

On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Psalms 141 and write Psalms 141:4 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
