Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a small lamp
Hold a small lamp. Read Genesis 12 in about four minutes, stopping at Genesis 12:12: “It will happen, when the Egyptians see you, that they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ They will kill me, but they will save you alive.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Genesis 12?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Genesis 12 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Now Yahweh said to Abram, “Leave your country, and your relatives, and your father’s house, and go to the land that I will show you.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “When he had come near to enter Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, “See now, I know that you are a beautiful woman to look at.” Genesis 12 opens with these words: “Now Yahweh said to Abram, “Leave your country, and your relatives, and your father’s house, and go to the land that I will show you.” The line to keep is Genesis 12:12: “It will happen, when the Egyptians see you, that they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ They will kill me, but they will save you alive.” Carry the word “happen” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Genesis 12:12: “It will happen, when the Egyptians see you, that they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ They will kill me, but they will save you alive.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Genesis 12? Then try this: Read “It will happen, when the Egyptians see you, that they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ They will kill me, but…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Genesis 12. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Genesis 12:12. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Genesis 12 and write Genesis 12:12 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
