Five-minute object lesson

Prop: a cup of water

Hold a cup of water. Read Job 34 in about four minutes, stopping at Job 34:9: “For he has said, ‘It profits a man nothing that he should delight himself with God.’” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Job 34?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.

Story script

Job 34 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Moreover Elihu answered,” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.

Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Who doesn’t respect the persons of princes, nor respects the rich more than the poor; for they all are the work of his hands.” Job 34 opens with these words: “Moreover Elihu answered,” The line to keep is Job 34:9: “For he has said, ‘It profits a man nothing that he should delight himself with God.’” Carry the word “profits” from that verse into the rest of the day.

The line worth learning out loud is Job 34:9: “For he has said, ‘It profits a man nothing that he should delight himself with God.’” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.

What happens first in Job 34? Then try this: Read “For he has said, ‘It profits a man nothing that he should delight himself with God.’” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
