Five-minute object lesson

Prop: a paper crown

Hold a paper crown. Read Job 30 in about four minutes, stopping at Job 30:8: “They are children of fools, yes, children of wicked men. They were flogged out of the land.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Job 30?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.

Story script

Job 30 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, ““But now those who are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I would have disdained to put with my sheep dogs.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.

Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, ““Now my soul is poured out within me. Days of affliction have taken hold on me.” Job 30 opens with these words: ““But now those who are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I would have disdained to put with my sheep dogs.” The line to keep is Job 30:8: “They are children of fools, yes, children of wicked men. They were flogged out of the land.” Carry the word “children” from that verse into the rest of the day.

The line worth learning out loud is Job 30:8: “They are children of fools, yes, children of wicked men. They were flogged out of the land.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.

What happens first in Job 30? Then try this: Read “They are children of fools, yes, children of wicked men. They were flogged out of the land.” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.

Group game

Walk the room as if you are moving through Job 30. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Job 30:8. The last child says the whole verse.

Craft

On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Job 30 and write Job 30:8 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
