Five-minute object lesson

Prop: a cup of water

Hold a cup of water. Read Job 24 in about four minutes, stopping at Job 24:5: “Behold, as wild donkeys in the desert, they go out to their work, seeking diligently for food. The wilderness yields them bread for their children.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Job 24?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.

Story script

Job 24 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, ““Why aren’t times laid up by the Almighty? Why don’t those who know him see his days?” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.

Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, ““These are of those who rebel against the light. They don’t know its ways, nor stay in its paths.” Job 24 opens with these words: ““Why aren’t times laid up by the Almighty? Why don’t those who know him see his days?” The line to keep is Job 24:5: “Behold, as wild donkeys in the desert, they go out to their work, seeking diligently for food. The wilderness yields them bread for their children.” Carry the word “behold” from that verse into the rest of the day.

The line worth learning out loud is Job 24:5: “Behold, as wild donkeys in the desert, they go out to their work, seeking diligently for food. The wilderness yields them bread for their children.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.

What happens first in Job 24? Then try this: Read “Behold, as wild donkeys in the desert, they go out to their work, seeking diligently for food. The…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
