Five-minute object lesson

Prop: a seed

Hold a seed. Read Job 16 in about four minutes, stopping at Job 16:7: “But now, God, you have surely worn me out. You have made desolate all my company.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Job 16?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.

Story script

Job 16 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Then Job answered,” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.

Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “I was at ease, and he broke me apart. Yes, he has taken me by the neck, and dashed me to pieces. He has also set me up for his target.” Job 16 opens with these words: “Then Job answered,” The line to keep is Job 16:7: “But now, God, you have surely worn me out. You have made desolate all my company.” Carry the word “surely” from that verse into the rest of the day.

The line worth learning out loud is Job 16:7: “But now, God, you have surely worn me out. You have made desolate all my company.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.

What happens first in Job 16? Then try this: Read “But now, God, you have surely worn me out. You have made desolate all my company.” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
