Five-minute object lesson

Prop: a piece of bread

Hold a piece of bread. Read Job 13 in about four minutes, stopping at Job 13:3: ““Surely I would speak to the Almighty. I desire to reason with God.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Job 13?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.

Story script

Job 13 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, ““Behold, my eye has seen all this. My ear has heard and understood it.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.

Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Behold, he will kill me. I have no hope. Nevertheless, I will maintain my ways before him.” Job 13 opens with these words: ““Behold, my eye has seen all this. My ear has heard and understood it.” The line to keep is Job 13:3: ““Surely I would speak to the Almighty. I desire to reason with God.” Carry the word “surely” from that verse into the rest of the day.

The line worth learning out loud is Job 13:3: ““Surely I would speak to the Almighty. I desire to reason with God.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.

What happens first in Job 13? Then try this: Read ““Surely I would speak to the Almighty. I desire to reason with God.” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.

Craft

On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Job 13 and write Job 13:3 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
