Five-minute object lesson

Prop: a seed

Hold a seed. Read Job 6 in about four minutes, stopping at Job 6:14: ““To him who is ready to faint, kindness should be shown from his friend; even to him who forsakes the fear of the Almighty.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Job 6?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.

Story script

Job 6 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Then Job answered,” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.

Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Which are black by reason of the ice, in which the snow hides itself.” Job 6 opens with these words: “Then Job answered,” The line to keep is Job 6:14: ““To him who is ready to faint, kindness should be shown from his friend; even to him who forsakes the fear of the Almighty.” Carry the word “ready” from that verse into the rest of the day.

The line worth learning out loud is Job 6:14: ““To him who is ready to faint, kindness should be shown from his friend; even to him who forsakes the fear of the Almighty.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.

What happens first in Job 6? Then try this: Read ““To him who is ready to faint, kindness should be shown from his friend; even to him who forsakes the fear…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
