Five-minute object lesson

Prop: a paper crown

Hold a paper crown. Read Esther 10 in about four minutes, stopping at Esther 10:1: “King Ahasuerus laid a tribute on the land, and on the islands of the sea.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Esther 10?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.

Story script

Esther 10 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “King Ahasuerus laid a tribute on the land, and on the islands of the sea.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.

Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “All the acts of his power and of his might, and the full account of the greatness of Mordecai, to which the king advanced him, aren’t they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Media and Persia?” Esther 10 opens with these words: “King Ahasuerus laid a tribute on the land, and on the islands of the sea.” The line to keep is Esther 10:1: “King Ahasuerus laid a tribute on the land, and on the islands of the sea.” Carry the word “king” from that verse into the rest of the day.

The line worth learning out loud is Esther 10:1: “King Ahasuerus laid a tribute on the land, and on the islands of the sea.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.

What happens first in Esther 10? Then try this: Read “King Ahasuerus laid a tribute on the land, and on the islands of the sea.” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.

Group game

Walk the room as if you are moving through Esther 10. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Esther 10:1. The last child says the whole verse.

Craft

On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Esther 10 and write Esther 10:1 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
