Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a folded cloth
Hold a folded cloth. Read Nehemiah 8 in about four minutes, stopping at Nehemiah 8:8: “They read in the book, in the law of God, distinctly; and they gave the sense, so that they understood the reading.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Nehemiah 8?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Nehemiah 8 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “All the people gathered themselves together as one man into the wide place that was in front of the water gate; and they spoke to Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which Yahweh had commanded to Israel.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to him for whom nothing is prepared, for today is holy to our Lord. Don’t be grieved, for the joy of Yahweh is your strength.”” Nehemiah 8 opens with these words: “All the people gathered themselves together as one man into the wide place that was in front of the water gate; and they spoke to Ezra the…” The line to keep is Nehemiah 8:8: “They read in the book, in the law of God, distinctly; and they gave the sense, so that they understood the reading.” Carry the word “read” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Nehemiah 8:8: “They read in the book, in the law of God, distinctly; and they gave the sense, so that they understood the reading.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Nehemiah 8? Then try this: Read “They read in the book, in the law of God, distinctly; and they gave the sense, so that they understood the…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Nehemiah 8. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Nehemiah 8:8. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Nehemiah 8 and write Nehemiah 8:8 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
