Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a piece of bread
Hold a piece of bread. Read Nehemiah 6 in about four minutes, stopping at Nehemiah 6:14: ““Remember, my God, Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and also the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear.”” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Nehemiah 6?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Nehemiah 6 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Now when it was reported to Sanballat, Tobiah, and to Geshem the Arabian, and to the rest of our enemies, that I had built the wall, and that there was no breach left in it (though even to that time I had not set up the doors in the gates)” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “I went to the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home; and he said, “Let us meet together in God’s house, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple; for they will come to kill you. Yes, in the night will they come to kill you.”” Nehemiah 6 opens with these words: “Now when it was reported to Sanballat, Tobiah, and to Geshem the Arabian, and to the rest of our enemies, that I had built the wall, and…” The line to keep is Nehemiah 6:14: ““Remember, my God, Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and also the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me…” Carry the word “remember” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Nehemiah 6:14: ““Remember, my God, Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and also the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear.”” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Nehemiah 6? Then try this: Read ““Remember, my God, Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and also the prophetess Noadiah, and…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Nehemiah 6. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Nehemiah 6:14. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Nehemiah 6 and write Nehemiah 6:14 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
