Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a seed
Hold a seed. Read Ezra 9 in about four minutes, stopping at Ezra 9:4: “Then everyone who trembled at the words of the God of Israel were assembled to me, because of their trespass of the captivity; and I sat confounded until the evening offering.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Ezra 9?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Ezra 9 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Now when these things were done, the princes came near to me, saying, “The people of Israel, the priests, and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands, following their abominations, even those of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Now for a little moment grace has been shown from Yahweh our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and revived us a little in our bondage.” Ezra 9 opens with these words: “Now when these things were done, the princes came near to me, saying, “The people of Israel, the priests, and the Levites, have not…” The line to keep is Ezra 9:4: “Then everyone who trembled at the words of the God of Israel were assembled to me, because of their trespass of the captivity; and I sat confounded until the…” Carry the word “everyone” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Ezra 9:4: “Then everyone who trembled at the words of the God of Israel were assembled to me, because of their trespass of the captivity; and I sat confounded until the evening offering.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Ezra 9? Then try this: Read “Then everyone who trembled at the words of the God of Israel were assembled to me, because of their trespass…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Ezra 9. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Ezra 9:4. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Ezra 9 and write Ezra 9:4 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
