Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a piece of bread
Hold a piece of bread. Read 2 Chronicles 32 in about four minutes, stopping at 2 Chronicles 32:8: “An arm of flesh is with him, but Yahweh our God is with us to help us and to fight our battles.” The people rested themselves on the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with 2 Chronicles 32?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
2 Chronicles 32 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “After these things and this faithfulness, Sennacherib king of Assyria came, entered into Judah, and encamped against the fortified cities, and intended to win them for himself.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “He also wrote letters insulting Yahweh, the God of Israel, and speaking against him, saying, “As the gods of the nations of the lands, which have not delivered their people out of my hand, so shall the God of Hezekiah not deliver his people out of my hand.”” 2 Chronicles 32 opens with these words: “After these things and this faithfulness, Sennacherib king of Assyria came, entered into Judah, and encamped against the fortified cities,…” The line to keep is 2 Chronicles 32:8: “An arm of flesh is with him, but Yahweh our God is with us to help us and to fight our battles.” The people rested themselves on the words of Hezekiah king of…” Carry the word “flesh” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is 2 Chronicles 32:8: “An arm of flesh is with him, but Yahweh our God is with us to help us and to fight our battles.” The people rested themselves on the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in 2 Chronicles 32? Then try this: Read “An arm of flesh is with him, but Yahweh our God is with us to help us and to fight our battles.” The people…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through 2 Chronicles 32. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from 2 Chronicles 32:8. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from 2 Chronicles 32 and write 2 Chronicles 32:8 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
