Five-minute object lesson

Prop: a folded cloth

Hold a folded cloth. Read 2 Chronicles 14 in about four minutes, stopping at 2 Chronicles 14:2: “Asa did that which was good and right in Yahweh his God’s eyes;” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with 2 Chronicles 14?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.

Story script

2 Chronicles 14 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “So Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in David’s city; and Asa his son reigned in his place. In his days, the land was quiet ten years.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.

Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Asa had an army of three hundred thousand out of Judah who bore bucklers and spears, and two hundred eighty thousand out of Benjamin who bore shields and drew bows. All these were mighty men of valor.” 2 Chronicles 14 opens with these words: “So Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in David’s city; and Asa his son reigned in his place. In his days, the land was…” The line to keep is 2 Chronicles 14:2: “Asa did that which was good and right in Yahweh his God’s eyes;” Carry the word “good” from that verse into the rest of the day.

The line worth learning out loud is 2 Chronicles 14:2: “Asa did that which was good and right in Yahweh his God’s eyes;” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.

What happens first in 2 Chronicles 14? Then try this: Read “Asa did that which was good and right in Yahweh his God’s eyes;” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
