Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a paper crown
Hold a paper crown. Read 2 Chronicles 9 in about four minutes, stopping at 2 Chronicles 9:23: “All the kings of the earth sought the presence of Solomon, to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with 2 Chronicles 9?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
2 Chronicles 9 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “When the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon, she came to test Solomon with hard questions at Jerusalem, with a very great caravan, including camels that bore spices, gold in abundance, and precious stones. When she had come to Solomon, she talked with him about all that was in her heart.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “He made three hundred shields of beaten gold. Three hundred shekels of gold went to one shield. The king put them in the House of the Forest of Lebanon.” 2 Chronicles 9 opens with these words: “When the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon, she came to test Solomon with hard questions at Jerusalem, with a very great…” The line to keep is 2 Chronicles 9:23: “All the kings of the earth sought the presence of Solomon, to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart.” Carry the word “kings” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is 2 Chronicles 9:23: “All the kings of the earth sought the presence of Solomon, to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in 2 Chronicles 9? Then try this: Read “All the kings of the earth sought the presence of Solomon, to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart.” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through 2 Chronicles 9. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from 2 Chronicles 9:23. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from 2 Chronicles 9 and write 2 Chronicles 9:23 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
