Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a paper crown
Hold a paper crown. Read 1 Chronicles 28 in about four minutes, stopping at 1 Chronicles 28:3: “But God said to me, ‘You shall not build a house for my name, because you are a man of war, and have shed blood.’” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with 1 Chronicles 28?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
1 Chronicles 28 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “David assembled all the princes of Israel, the princes of the tribes, the captains of the companies who served the king by division, the captains of thousands, the captains of hundreds, and the rulers over all the substance and possessions of the king and of his sons, with the officers and the mighty men, even all the mighty men of valor, to Jerusalem.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Then David gave to Solomon his son the plans for the porch of the temple, for its houses, for its treasuries, for its upper rooms, for its inner rooms, for the place of the mercy seat;” 1 Chronicles 28 opens with these words: “David assembled all the princes of Israel, the princes of the tribes, the captains of the companies who served the king by division, the…” The line to keep is 1 Chronicles 28:3: “But God said to me, ‘You shall not build a house for my name, because you are a man of war, and have shed blood.’” Carry the word “build” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is 1 Chronicles 28:3: “But God said to me, ‘You shall not build a house for my name, because you are a man of war, and have shed blood.’” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in 1 Chronicles 28? Then try this: Read “But God said to me, ‘You shall not build a house for my name, because you are a man of war, and have shed…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through 1 Chronicles 28. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from 1 Chronicles 28:3. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from 1 Chronicles 28 and write 1 Chronicles 28:3 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
