Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a small lamp
Hold a small lamp. Read 2 Kings 14 in about four minutes, stopping at 2 Kings 14:10: “You have indeed struck Edom, and your heart has lifted you up. Enjoy the glory of it, and stay at home; for why should you meddle to your harm, that you fall, even you, and Judah with you?’”” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with 2 Kings 14?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
2 Kings 14 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “In the second year of Joash son of Joahaz king of Israel Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah began to reign.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Now the rest of the acts of Jehoash which he did, and his might, and how he fought with Amaziah king of Judah, aren’t they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?” 2 Kings 14 opens with these words: “In the second year of Joash son of Joahaz king of Israel Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah began to reign.” The line to keep is 2 Kings 14:10: “You have indeed struck Edom, and your heart has lifted you up. Enjoy the glory of it, and stay at home; for why should you meddle to your harm, that you fall,…” Carry the word “indeed” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is 2 Kings 14:10: “You have indeed struck Edom, and your heart has lifted you up. Enjoy the glory of it, and stay at home; for why should you meddle to your harm, that you fall, even you, and Judah with you?’”” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in 2 Kings 14? Then try this: Read “You have indeed struck Edom, and your heart has lifted you up. Enjoy the glory of it, and stay at home; for…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through 2 Kings 14. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from 2 Kings 14:10. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from 2 Kings 14 and write 2 Kings 14:10 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
