Five-minute object lesson

Prop: a piece of bread

Hold a piece of bread. Read Ruth 2 in about four minutes, stopping at Ruth 2:12: “May Yahweh repay your work, and a full reward be given to you from Yahweh, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Ruth 2?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.

Story script

Ruth 2 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Naomi had a relative of her husband’s, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech, and his name was Boaz.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.

Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “May Yahweh repay your work, and a full reward be given to you from Yahweh, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”” Ruth 2 opens with these words: “Naomi had a relative of her husband’s, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech, and his name was Boaz.” The line to keep is Ruth 2:12: “May Yahweh repay your work, and a full reward be given to you from Yahweh, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”” Carry the word “repay” from that verse into the rest of the day.

The line worth learning out loud is Ruth 2:12: “May Yahweh repay your work, and a full reward be given to you from Yahweh, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.

What happens first in Ruth 2? Then try this: Read “May Yahweh repay your work, and a full reward be given to you from Yahweh, the God of Israel, under whose…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.

Group game

Walk the room as if you are moving through Ruth 2. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Ruth 2:12. The last child says the whole verse.

Craft

On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Ruth 2 and write Ruth 2:12 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
