Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a folded cloth
Hold a folded cloth. Read Judges 15 in about four minutes, stopping at Judges 15:1: “But after a while, in the time of wheat harvest, Samson visited his wife with a young goat. He said, “I will go in to my wife’s room.” But her father wouldn’t allow him to go in.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Judges 15?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Judges 15 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “But after a while, in the time of wheat harvest, Samson visited his wife with a young goat. He said, “I will go in to my wife’s room.” But her father wouldn’t allow him to go in.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Then three thousand men of Judah went down to the cave in Etam’s rock, and said to Samson, “Don’t you know that the Philistines are rulers over us? What then is this that you have done to us?” He said to them, “As they did to me, so I have done to them.”” Judges 15 opens with these words: “But after a while, in the time of wheat harvest, Samson visited his wife with a young goat. He said, “I will go in to my wife’s room.” But…” The line to keep is Judges 15:1: “But after a while, in the time of wheat harvest, Samson visited his wife with a young goat. He said, “I will go in to my wife’s room.” But her father wouldn’t…” Carry the word “time” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Judges 15:1: “But after a while, in the time of wheat harvest, Samson visited his wife with a young goat. He said, “I will go in to my wife’s room.” But her father wouldn’t allow him to go in.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Judges 15? Then try this: Read “But after a while, in the time of wheat harvest, Samson visited his wife with a young goat. He said, “I will…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Judges 15. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Judges 15:1. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Judges 15 and write Judges 15:1 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
