Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a seed
Hold a seed. Read Judges 6 in about four minutes, stopping at Judges 6:8: “Yahweh sent a prophet to the children of Israel; and he said to them, “Yahweh says, the God of Israel, ‘I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you out of the house of bondage.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Judges 6?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Judges 6 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “The children of Israel did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight: and Yahweh delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Then Yahweh’s angel stretched out the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes; and fire went up out of the rock, and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes. Then Yahweh’s angel departed out of his sight.” Judges 6 opens with these words: “The children of Israel did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight: and Yahweh delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.” The line to keep is Judges 6:8: “Yahweh sent a prophet to the children of Israel; and he said to them, “Yahweh says, the God of Israel, ‘I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you out of…” Carry the word “sent” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Judges 6:8: “Yahweh sent a prophet to the children of Israel; and he said to them, “Yahweh says, the God of Israel, ‘I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you out of the house of bondage.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Judges 6? Then try this: Read “Yahweh sent a prophet to the children of Israel; and he said to them, “Yahweh says, the God of Israel, ‘I…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Judges 6. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Judges 6:8. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Judges 6 and write Judges 6:8 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
