Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a wooden spoon
Hold a wooden spoon. Read Joshua 2 in about four minutes, stopping at Joshua 2:11: “As soon as we had heard it, our hearts melted, and there wasn’t any more spirit in any man, because of you: for Yahweh your God, he is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Joshua 2?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Joshua 2 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Joshua the son of Nun secretly sent two men out of Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, including Jericho.” They went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and slept there.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “and that you will save alive my father, my mother, my brothers, and my sisters, and all that they have, and will deliver our lives from death.”” Joshua 2 opens with these words: “Joshua the son of Nun secretly sent two men out of Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, including Jericho.” They went and came…” The line to keep is Joshua 2:11: “As soon as we had heard it, our hearts melted, and there wasn’t any more spirit in any man, because of you: for Yahweh your God, he is God in heaven above,…” Carry the word “soon” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Joshua 2:11: “As soon as we had heard it, our hearts melted, and there wasn’t any more spirit in any man, because of you: for Yahweh your God, he is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Joshua 2? Then try this: Read “As soon as we had heard it, our hearts melted, and there wasn’t any more spirit in any man, because of you:…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Joshua 2. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Joshua 2:11. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Joshua 2 and write Joshua 2:11 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
