Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a folded cloth
Hold a folded cloth. Read Deuteronomy 32 in about four minutes, stopping at Deuteronomy 32:46: “He said to them, “Set your heart to all the words which I testify to you today, which you shall command your children to observe to do, all the words of this law.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Deuteronomy 32?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Deuteronomy 32 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Give ear, you heavens, and I will speak. Let the earth hear the words of my mouth.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “were it not that I feared the provocation of the enemy, lest their adversaries should judge wrongly, lest they should say, ‘Our hand is exalted, Yahweh has not done all this.’”” Deuteronomy 32 opens with these words: “Give ear, you heavens, and I will speak. Let the earth hear the words of my mouth.” The line to keep is Deuteronomy 32:46: “He said to them, “Set your heart to all the words which I testify to you today, which you shall command your children to observe to do, all the words of this…” Carry the word “heart” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Deuteronomy 32:46: “He said to them, “Set your heart to all the words which I testify to you today, which you shall command your children to observe to do, all the words of this law.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Deuteronomy 32? Then try this: Read “He said to them, “Set your heart to all the words which I testify to you today, which you shall command your…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Deuteronomy 32. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Deuteronomy 32:46. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Deuteronomy 32 and write Deuteronomy 32:46 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
