Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a smooth stone
Hold a smooth stone. Read Deuteronomy 9 in about four minutes, stopping at Deuteronomy 9:6: “Know therefore, that Yahweh your God doesn’t give you this good land to possess for your righteousness; for you are a stiff-necked people.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Deuteronomy 9?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Deuteronomy 9 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Hear, Israel! You are to pass over the Jordan today, to go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourself, cities great and fortified up to the sky,” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “So I turned and came down from the mountain, and the mountain was burning with fire. The two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands.” Deuteronomy 9 opens with these words: “Hear, Israel! You are to pass over the Jordan today, to go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourself, cities great and…” The line to keep is Deuteronomy 9:6: “Know therefore, that Yahweh your God doesn’t give you this good land to possess for your righteousness; for you are a stiff-necked people.” Carry the word “know” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Deuteronomy 9:6: “Know therefore, that Yahweh your God doesn’t give you this good land to possess for your righteousness; for you are a stiff-necked people.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Deuteronomy 9? Then try this: Read “Know therefore, that Yahweh your God doesn’t give you this good land to possess for your righteousness; for…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Deuteronomy 9. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Deuteronomy 9:6. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Deuteronomy 9 and write Deuteronomy 9:6 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
