Prop: a small lamp

Hold a small lamp. Read Numbers 34 in about four minutes, stopping at Numbers 34:13: “Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying, “This is the land which you shall inherit by lot, which Yahweh has commanded to give to the nine tribes, and to the half-tribe;” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Numbers 34?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.

Story script

Numbers 34 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.

Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “The two tribes and the half-tribe have received their inheritance beyond the Jordan at Jericho eastward, toward the sunrise.”” Numbers 34 opens with these words: “Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,” The line to keep is Numbers 34:13: “Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying, “This is the land which you shall inherit by lot, which Yahweh has commanded to give to the nine tribes, and…” Carry the word “moses” from that verse into the rest of the day.

The line worth learning out loud is Numbers 34:13: “Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying, “This is the land which you shall inherit by lot, which Yahweh has commanded to give to the nine tribes, and to the half-tribe;” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.

What happens first in Numbers 34? Then try this: Read “Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying, “This is the land which you shall inherit by lot, which…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
