Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a seed
Hold a seed. Read Numbers 19 in about four minutes, stopping at Numbers 19:2: ““This is the statute of the law which Yahweh has commanded. Tell the children of Israel to bring you a red heifer without spot, in which is no defect, and which was never yoked.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Numbers 19?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Numbers 19 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “He shall purify himself with water on the third day, and on the seventh day he shall be clean; but if he doesn’t purify himself the third day, then the seventh day he shall not be clean.” Numbers 19 opens with these words: “Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,” The line to keep is Numbers 19:2: ““This is the statute of the law which Yahweh has commanded. Tell the children of Israel to bring you a red heifer without spot, in which is no defect, and…” Carry the word “statute” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Numbers 19:2: ““This is the statute of the law which Yahweh has commanded. Tell the children of Israel to bring you a red heifer without spot, in which is no defect, and which was never yoked.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Numbers 19? Then try this: Read ““This is the statute of the law which Yahweh has commanded. Tell the children of Israel to bring you a red…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Numbers 19. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Numbers 19:2. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Numbers 19 and write Numbers 19:2 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
