Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a piece of bread
Hold a piece of bread. Read Numbers 16 in about four minutes, stopping at Numbers 16:2: “They rose up before Moses, with some of the children of Israel, two hundred fifty princes of the congregation, called to the assembly, men of renown.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Numbers 16?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Numbers 16 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took some men.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “He spoke to the congregation, saying, “Depart, please, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest you be consumed in all their sins!”” Numbers 16 opens with these words: “Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth,…” The line to keep is Numbers 16:2: “They rose up before Moses, with some of the children of Israel, two hundred fifty princes of the congregation, called to the assembly, men of renown.” Carry the word “rose” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Numbers 16:2: “They rose up before Moses, with some of the children of Israel, two hundred fifty princes of the congregation, called to the assembly, men of renown.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Numbers 16? Then try this: Read “They rose up before Moses, with some of the children of Israel, two hundred fifty princes of the…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Numbers 16. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Numbers 16:2. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Numbers 16 and write Numbers 16:2 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
