Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a ribbon
Hold a ribbon. Read Numbers 11 in about four minutes, stopping at Numbers 11:4: “The mixed multitude that was among them lusted exceedingly: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, “Who will give us meat to eat?” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Numbers 11?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Numbers 11 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “The people were complaining in the ears of Yahweh. When Yahweh heard it, his anger burned; and Yahweh’s fire burned among them, and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, ““Say to the people, ‘Sanctify yourselves in preparation for tomorrow, and you will eat meat; for you have wept in the ears of Yahweh, saying, “Who will give us meat to eat? For it was well with us in Egypt.” Therefore Yahweh will give you meat, and you will eat.” Numbers 11 opens with these words: “The people were complaining in the ears of Yahweh. When Yahweh heard it, his anger burned; and Yahweh’s fire burned among them, and…” The line to keep is Numbers 11:4: “The mixed multitude that was among them lusted exceedingly: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, “Who will give us meat to eat?” Carry the word “mixed” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Numbers 11:4: “The mixed multitude that was among them lusted exceedingly: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, “Who will give us meat to eat?” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Numbers 11? Then try this: Read “The mixed multitude that was among them lusted exceedingly: and the children of Israel also wept again, and…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Numbers 11. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Numbers 11:4. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Numbers 11 and write Numbers 11:4 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
