Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a paper crown
Hold a paper crown. Read Numbers 3 in about four minutes, stopping at Numbers 3:8: “They shall keep all the furnishings of the Tent of Meeting, and the obligations of the children of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Numbers 3?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Numbers 3 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Now this is the history of the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that Yahweh spoke with Moses in Mount Sinai.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “and the hangings of the court, and the screen for the door of the court, which is by the tabernacle, and around the altar, and its cords for all of its service.” Numbers 3 opens with these words: “Now this is the history of the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that Yahweh spoke with Moses in Mount Sinai.” The line to keep is Numbers 3:8: “They shall keep all the furnishings of the Tent of Meeting, and the obligations of the children of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle.” Carry the word “keep” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Numbers 3:8: “They shall keep all the furnishings of the Tent of Meeting, and the obligations of the children of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Numbers 3? Then try this: Read “They shall keep all the furnishings of the Tent of Meeting, and the obligations of the children of Israel,…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Numbers 3. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Numbers 3:8. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Numbers 3 and write Numbers 3:8 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
