Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a wooden spoon
Hold a wooden spoon. Read Leviticus 19 in about four minutes, stopping at Leviticus 19:2: ““Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, and tell them, ‘You shall be holy; for I, Yahweh your God, am holy.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Leviticus 19?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Leviticus 19 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, ““‘You shall keep my statutes. “‘You shall not cross-breed different kinds of animals. “‘You shall not sow your field with two kinds of seed; “‘Don’t wear a garment made of two kinds of material.” Leviticus 19 opens with these words: “Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,” The line to keep is Leviticus 19:2: ““Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, and tell them, ‘You shall be holy; for I, Yahweh your God, am holy.” Carry the word “speak” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Leviticus 19:2: ““Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, and tell them, ‘You shall be holy; for I, Yahweh your God, am holy.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Leviticus 19? Then try this: Read ““Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, and tell them, ‘You shall be holy; for I, Yahweh…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Leviticus 19. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Leviticus 19:2. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Leviticus 19 and write Leviticus 19:2 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
