Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a piece of bread
Hold a piece of bread. Read Leviticus 13 in about four minutes, stopping at Leviticus 13:7: “But if the scab spreads on the skin, after he has shown himself to the priest for his cleansing, he shall show himself to the priest again.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Leviticus 13?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Leviticus 13 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “then the priest shall examine the plague; and behold, if its appearance is deeper than the skin, and the hair in it is yellow and thin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is an itch, it is leprosy of the head or of the beard.” Leviticus 13 opens with these words: “Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,” The line to keep is Leviticus 13:7: “But if the scab spreads on the skin, after he has shown himself to the priest for his cleansing, he shall show himself to the priest again.” Carry the word “scab” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Leviticus 13:7: “But if the scab spreads on the skin, after he has shown himself to the priest for his cleansing, he shall show himself to the priest again.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Leviticus 13? Then try this: Read “But if the scab spreads on the skin, after he has shown himself to the priest for his cleansing, he shall…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Leviticus 13. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Leviticus 13:7. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Leviticus 13 and write Leviticus 13:7 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
