Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a piece of bread
Hold a piece of bread. Read Leviticus 3 in about four minutes, stopping at Leviticus 3:1: ““‘If his offering is a sacrifice of peace offerings; if he offers it from the herd, whether male or female, he shall offer it without defect before Yahweh.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Leviticus 3?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Leviticus 3 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, ““‘If his offering is a sacrifice of peace offerings; if he offers it from the herd, whether male or female, he shall offer it without defect before Yahweh.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “He shall offer from the sacrifice of peace offerings an offering made by fire to Yahweh; its fat, the entire tail fat, he shall take away close to the backbone; and the fat that covers the inwards, and all the fat that is on the inwards,” Leviticus 3 opens with these words: ““‘If his offering is a sacrifice of peace offerings; if he offers it from the herd, whether male or female, he shall offer it without…” The line to keep is Leviticus 3:1: ““‘If his offering is a sacrifice of peace offerings; if he offers it from the herd, whether male or female, he shall offer it without defect before Yahweh.” Carry the word “offering” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Leviticus 3:1: ““‘If his offering is a sacrifice of peace offerings; if he offers it from the herd, whether male or female, he shall offer it without defect before Yahweh.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Leviticus 3? Then try this: Read ““‘If his offering is a sacrifice of peace offerings; if he offers it from the herd, whether male or female,…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Leviticus 3. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Leviticus 3:1. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Leviticus 3 and write Leviticus 3:1 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
