Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a small lamp
Hold a small lamp. Read Leviticus 1 in about four minutes, stopping at Leviticus 1:2: ““Speak to the children of Israel, and tell them, ‘When anyone of you offers an offering to Yahweh, you shall offer your offering of the livestock, from the herd and from the flock.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Leviticus 1?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Leviticus 1 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Yahweh called to Moses, and spoke to him from the Tent of Meeting, saying,” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “but its innards and its legs he shall wash with water. The priest shall burn all of it on the altar, for a burnt offering, an offering made by fire, of a pleasant aroma to Yahweh.” Leviticus 1 opens with these words: “Yahweh called to Moses, and spoke to him from the Tent of Meeting, saying,” The line to keep is Leviticus 1:2: ““Speak to the children of Israel, and tell them, ‘When anyone of you offers an offering to Yahweh, you shall offer your offering of the livestock, from the…” Carry the word “speak” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Leviticus 1:2: ““Speak to the children of Israel, and tell them, ‘When anyone of you offers an offering to Yahweh, you shall offer your offering of the livestock, from the herd and from the flock.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Leviticus 1? Then try this: Read ““Speak to the children of Israel, and tell them, ‘When anyone of you offers an offering to Yahweh, you shall…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Leviticus 1. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Leviticus 1:2. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Leviticus 1 and write Leviticus 1:2 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
