Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a wooden spoon
Hold a wooden spoon. Read Exodus 39 in about four minutes, stopping at Exodus 39:6: “They worked the onyx stones, enclosed in settings of gold, engraved with the engravings of a signet, according to the names of the children of Israel.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Exodus 39?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Exodus 39 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Of the blue, purple, and scarlet, they made finely worked garments, for ministering in the holy place, and made the holy garments for Aaron; as Yahweh commanded Moses.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “He made the robe of the ephod of woven work, all of blue.” Exodus 39 opens with these words: “Of the blue, purple, and scarlet, they made finely worked garments, for ministering in the holy place, and made the holy garments for…” The line to keep is Exodus 39:6: “They worked the onyx stones, enclosed in settings of gold, engraved with the engravings of a signet, according to the names of the children of Israel.” Carry the word “worked” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Exodus 39:6: “They worked the onyx stones, enclosed in settings of gold, engraved with the engravings of a signet, according to the names of the children of Israel.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Exodus 39? Then try this: Read “They worked the onyx stones, enclosed in settings of gold, engraved with the engravings of a signet,…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Exodus 39. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Exodus 39:6. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Exodus 39 and write Exodus 39:6 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
