Five-minute object lesson

Prop: a key

Hold a key. Read Exodus 37 in about four minutes, stopping at Exodus 37:6: “He made a mercy seat of pure gold. Its length was two and a half cubits, and a cubit and a half its width.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Exodus 37?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.

Story script

Exodus 37 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Bezalel made the ark of acacia wood. Its length was two and a half cubits, and its width a cubit and a half, and a cubit and a half its height.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.

Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “He made the poles of acacia wood, and overlaid them with gold, to carry the table.” Exodus 37 opens with these words: “Bezalel made the ark of acacia wood. Its length was two and a half cubits, and its width a cubit and a half, and a cubit and a half its…” The line to keep is Exodus 37:6: “He made a mercy seat of pure gold. Its length was two and a half cubits, and a cubit and a half its width.” Carry the word “mercy” from that verse into the rest of the day.

The line worth learning out loud is Exodus 37:6: “He made a mercy seat of pure gold. Its length was two and a half cubits, and a cubit and a half its width.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.

What happens first in Exodus 37? Then try this: Read “He made a mercy seat of pure gold. Its length was two and a half cubits, and a cubit and a half its width.” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.

Group game

Walk the room as if you are moving through Exodus 37. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Exodus 37:6. The last child says the whole verse.

Craft

On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Exodus 37 and write Exodus 37:6 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
