Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a folded cloth
Hold a folded cloth. Read Exodus 35 in about four minutes, stopping at Exodus 35:31: “He has filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all kinds of workmanship;” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Exodus 35?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Exodus 35 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Moses assembled all the congregation of the children of Israel, and said to them, “These are the words which Yahweh has commanded, that you should do them.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “the pins of the tabernacle, the pins of the court, and their cords;” Exodus 35 opens with these words: “Moses assembled all the congregation of the children of Israel, and said to them, “These are the words which Yahweh has commanded, that…” The line to keep is Exodus 35:31: “He has filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all kinds of workmanship;” Carry the word “filled” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Exodus 35:31: “He has filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all kinds of workmanship;” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Exodus 35? Then try this: Read “He has filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all kinds of…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Exodus 35. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Exodus 35:31. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Exodus 35 and write Exodus 35:31 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
