Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a cup of water
Hold a cup of water. Read Exodus 34 in about four minutes, stopping at Exodus 34:6: “Yahweh passed by before him, and proclaimed, “Yahweh! Yahweh, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness and truth,” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Exodus 34?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Exodus 34 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Yahweh said to Moses, “Chisel two stone tablets like the first. I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, ““You shall keep the feast of unleavened bread. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, at the time appointed in the month Abib; for in the month Abib you came out of Egypt.” Exodus 34 opens with these words: “Yahweh said to Moses, “Chisel two stone tablets like the first. I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets,…” The line to keep is Exodus 34:6: “Yahweh passed by before him, and proclaimed, “Yahweh! Yahweh, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness and truth,” Carry the word “passed” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Exodus 34:6: “Yahweh passed by before him, and proclaimed, “Yahweh! Yahweh, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness and truth,” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Exodus 34? Then try this: Read “Yahweh passed by before him, and proclaimed, “Yahweh! Yahweh, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger,…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Exodus 34. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Exodus 34:6. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Exodus 34 and write Exodus 34:6 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
